Free SSProtect Basic License
Earlier this week, we announced SSProtect Basic at no cost, which allows you to download and utilize SSProtect at home, with personal data, and also at work with corporate information. This provides several advantages, cryptographically isolating personal data from corporate information, for example.
But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves, and before we get into that, we’d like to share a couple things about our Licensing that are designed to maintain our non-intrusive approach to matters.
No Hassle Basic/ Trial Licensing
No Marketing Email
No matter how you interact with us, we will never send you marketing email or put you on a marketing list. We don’t sell your data or share your data either – after all, we’re in the Privacy business. More details here.
We are humbled that you may choose to use our software, and as a gesture of good faith, we in return make certain we don’t bother you with unnecessary noise. If we’ve done our job right, we can maintain confidence that you’ll let us know if you need something. It’s better that way, right?
NOTE: We don’t have or use email marketing services in any form, for better or worse. Our sales interactions are direct 1-1 with our partners and customers through our various channels.
No Credit Card, No Commitment, No Subscription to Cancel
When you use a Trial License, you don’t have to commit to a subscription and lay down a credit card then remember to go back and cancel before payment is processed. This is unnecessary – and for that reason, when your Trial License expires, your SSProtect Account/ Organization will automatically fallback to Basic License operation.
When to Trial Optional Service Components
When you create your first Account, it’ll be assigned a Basic or Trial License depending on whether you’ve chosen to activate optional Service Components like :Recover and/ or :Email.
We however recommend starting without optional services so you can get accustomed to the seamless nature of SSProtect, then form a mental image of how you intend to use it. Once you are confident you have an idea, you can then request activation of optional Service Components through the License and Component Interface.
When our team receives that request, we’ll activate services for you and, after you Refresh Login, your Trial License will be assigned and the clock will start ticking. With :Email, you’ll be prompted to install the Outlook Add-In, but in all other cases activation results in new context-specific UI components that you use to take advantage of related features.
Extending a Trial License
You can, at any time, submit a request to Extend your Trial License for ongoing use. A 7-day extension is almost always automatically granted, but if you’re in the middle of a serious evaluation, let us know and we’ll work with you to meet your needs.
Why SSProtect?
As you probably know by now, SSProtect uses a unique form of patented cryptographic offloading to help protect your data from unauthorized disclosure. The idea is to assume the host is compromised, provide controls that limit content exposure, support Business Continuity with Availability features, and deliver precise Reporting details that include all the information necessary to prioritize Incident Response and Recovery operations.
While we’d normally author this to explain how encryption can help, then close with reference to our system as one of many options, we can’t quite do that for one simple reason: Encryption, alone, is insufficient for delivering effective controls that reduce the scope and impact of the dynamics we’re going to discuss.
SSProtect Basic
SSProtect Basic allows you to utilize all essential Service Components – encryption with integrity assurances, auditing and reporting, and secure sharing – without paying license fees. These basic capabilities have a variety of applications even for an Individual working with personal data. Here are some immediate cases that come to mind.
Consolidate Cloud Protection
How many Sync and Sharing systems do you use in a week? One group uses Dropbox, another uses Box, then there’s Egnyte and of course OneDrive, Google Drive – it seems everyone has their way of storing your documents.
It’s one thing to encrypt data stored in the cloud, another to encrypt data stored on the host – and yet another to encrypt data on the host with integrated workflows. We’ve got that covered for you.
And what happens if you accidentally open a document in a sync/ sharing folder? If you’re using SSProtect, plaintext won’t sync to the cloud, only the re-encrypted version created after you save/ close.
Consolidating Uniform Protection and Control across all these systems, while maintaining native use, reduces administrative overhead while providing assurances that your data is protected not only while stored in their cloud services, but also in related cloud services and on your host computer.
Third Party Systems
When you share content with a peer, you don’t know what environment they’re working in. There are times that we’ve been uncomfortable sharing Confidential information with third parties almost certain that the information is going to end up in the public domain. There’s only so much you can do about that, but you can make certain your data remains protected when they’re breached. That’s what SSProtect provides – protection that stays with the data. Since you can authorize access with Third Party Trust policies, you can maintain protection even if and when those external systems are under attack.
Accidental Disclosure
What if you’re working for multiple vendors – maybe competitors – and you’ve got lab data and reports in Excel and PDF form that you want to share, and you accidentally share one client’s data with another – one of their competitors? It happens, especially with contract science in certain industries (we don’t want to call anyone out).
When you’re using SSProtect, unauthorized Third Parties can’t access content – use SSProtect to manage these sensitive documents, scoped by Accounts associated with each audience, and you’ll be fine if you accidentally email the wrong report to the wrong person – when they try to open it, SSProtect will prevent decryption to plaintext for you. You’ll also have an audit trail to prove the failure.
This can have a far-reaching impact on liabilities, and you can breathe a sigh of relief that you’re not the one liable for putting a group of people in a jam – you know, the ones that cut your pay check?
Lost or Stolen Laptop
If you have a laptop and you’re traveling only to discover that it’s been taken right out from underneath you (happens all the time), or if you’re like some people we know (*ahem*) and prone to leaving something at a hotel or in the back of a cab (cab? We mean Uber)…what happens when the wrong person picks up your hardware and starts poking around? If your laptop ends up at an electronics, “chop shop”, they’ll find a way in – and when they do, there’s all your data.
For example: Trusted platform module security defeated in 30 minutes, no soldering required
With SSProtect, you can contact your Administrator to immediately disable your Account which precludes further access to your content. If you’re using fine-grained 2FA with a token and it’s on your keyring, you need not worry. Even if you’re only using Login 2FA with Duo Security, chances are they won’t be able to authenticate and Impersonate your SSProtect Identity.
In any case, having content protected on the host helps you avoid the potential impact of someone else accessing your content. Surely they’d sell it back to you, for a price…
Ransomware and Doxing
This is an ongoing threat, and it can happen to anyone – there are always new ways attackers use to get into systems, and if you have a corporate laptop on a home network, it’s possible that your local personal computers will also be taken for the ride.
Or worse, your company may be targeted and your WFH environment used as a back door into a corporate VPN endpoint. So many corporate breaches occur through VPN endpoints, it’s…daunting (and not as well documented as reality dictates).
SSProtect will help maintain protection of your sensitive information – whether love letters, private ventures you’re considering, a journal with deeply personal introspection, personal financial details – whatever the case may be, it’d be difficult for attackers to hold content for Ransom (if you’re using :Recover) and threaten you with disclosure (even SSProtect Basic stops this threat) because they can’t get to your plaintext.
The Next Back Door
How long before we have another SolarWinds on our hands and wake up to learn that millions of documents have been heisted from a back door in software that you use and rely on everyday? By then it’s too late – the damage has been done. But if you’re using SSProtect, your managed content is safe – decryption keys have never been on the host computer, and unless the attackers have found a way into KODiAC Cloud Services and reversed back-end systems to correlate information with customer documents….well you’ll be fine.
Integrating New Software
Maybe you’re working on a new desktop application and want to bind SSProtect specifics directly into your value proposition. You can do this with our :Expand API (contact our team for more information). Though SSProtect was designed to work independent of the application and infrastructure you use, there are times when you might want to bind more intimate integration directly into your software’s offerings. Perhaps you have a way of discovering all business documents on a host computer and classifying each of them based on what you find inside – you can then directly integrate w/ SSProtect to automatically protect those documents and offer this service to your customers – now it’s not just a report, now you’re offering automatic protection based on sensitivity.
We are in fact seeking out partners for such ventures and welcome any creative thinking along these lines. Send us a note and we’ll setup a discussion.
Your Next Best Thing: Front Page News
What if you’re forming a startup and sharing ideas and concept with potential co-founders in email? You’ve drafted documents with ideas, potential markets, strategies – you don’t want that information to end up on the network of the accelerator that you’ve joined to get rolling, right? Maybe they’re compromised, and in 3 months you find your product advertised on a late-night informercial, manufactured in China, available for the low, low price…
Or maybe a competitor targets your partner who is working in a coffee shop down the road. Next thing you know, a disparaging remark is Front Page News: “Did you hear what he said??” Isn’t that what news is now?
You want to be on the front page – we want you to be on the front page! Just not that way. With SSProtect, you can work with your team and collaborate easily and securely with the added knowledge that networks you join represent a reduced threat of disclosure, even when breached, because your content is closely managed.
Simple and Effective Protection – Why Not?
In 2014 we set out to protect data with simplicity and effectiveness. After years of work combining different innovations that aren’t otherwise available, we are happy to offer SSProtect Basic to you at no charge.
We want to make a difference in this ongoing battle between opportunistic thieves and well-meaning, hard-working people. With SSProtect, we’re confident we’ll make a dent in the motivations of those who are looking for a quick buck while helping you maintain your own path to success.
